Intent:

Here at Queen Mary Avenue, it is our intent to provide children with an engaging and stimulating curriculum. Art is taught through a topic-based approach in which children have the opportunity to learn through real life memorable experiences.

The curriculum intent is to provide opportunities for creativity within art, exploration of culture and heritage and to build on artistic skills through progression within the year groups. Pupils are encouraged to work collaboratively and independently to create meaningful art work. Children are exposed to the correct vocabulary and encouraged to use this within their lessons. Our pupils are inspired, engaged and challenged which in turn develops their confidence, self-belief and a love of learning.

 

Implementation:

Art is delivered as part of our topic-based curriculum we will achieve our intent by:

Carefully planning purposeful activities that excite and motivate the children.

Following a carefully planned progression of skills which allows the pupils to build on prior learning.

Teaching specific vocabulary and pupils being encouraged to use this when talking about and sharing their work.

Sharing the work of other artists and crafts people and discussing how this relates to our culture and heritage.

Encouraging pupils to be reflective and evaluate their work.

In EYFS pupils are encouraged to:

Explore and use a variety of media and materials through a combination of child initiated and adult directed activities. 

They have opportunities to learn to:

Explore the textures, movement, feel and look of different media and materials

Respond to a range of media and materials, develop their understanding of them in order to manipulate and create different effects

Use different media and materials to express their own ideas

Explore colour and use for a particular purpose

Develop skills to use simple tools and techniques competently and appropriately

Select appropriate media and techniques and adapt their work where necessary

In KS1 pupils are taught to:

Use a range of materials creatively to design and make products.

Use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination.

Develop a wide range of art techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.

Discuss the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

 

Impact:

The children at Queen Mary will become confident and creative learners within art. 

Children in FS will be able to use media, materials, skills and techniques to create their own artwork. They should have an understanding of what means to be an artist.

Children in KS1 will be able to apply artistic skills shown through drawing, painting and sculpting. They should have an awareness of a range of artists and craftspeople, and be able to discuss the artwork they come across.

Each year the subject leader will monitor the impact through whole school scrutiny. The subject leader will also review class scrap books and pupil’s topic books which will provide evidence of art lessons. Feedback will be given to staff and actions will be added to an annual action plan.
