Maths
Intent:
At Queen Mary Avenue Infant & Nursery School it is our intent to provide children with a high-quality, challenging mathematics curriculum linked clearly to real life experiences. The exciting collaborative learning journey will allow for all children to work together to become confident in the fundamentals of maths, developing their conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately. Children will build resilience and understanding through problem solving and be able to reason mathematically by justifying, making links and providing proof using mathematical vocabulary.
Implementation:
We will achieve this by:
Inspiring and engaging children in maths through a ‘real life hook’ in each lesson.
Children working collaboratively with their peers to develop and improve their skills.
Promoting the use of mathematical language to talk about their learning.
Developing learning through a concrete, pictorial, abstract approach through each maths unit.
Children being active learners in lessons with high levels of participation.
Practicing mental maths daily to improve fluency and speed.
Providing exciting real life experiences through carefully planned purposeful play and a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities. (EYFS)
Concrete resources always being available for children to use independently to help them with their learning.
Giving daily opportunities for children to apply their mathematical knowledge through reasoning and problem solving.
Impact:
Through quality first teaching linked to real life contexts, children will develop the skills they need to apply their knowledge to their everyday lives and to achieve age related expectations in mathematics. They will have a clear understanding of different concepts and be confident and ready to move forward in their next stage of learning.
