At Queen Mary Avenue Infant and Nursery School we  follow the Read Write Inc phonics programme developed by Ruth Miskin which is based upon learning and blending pure sounds.  Children are assessed and grouped on a half termly basis, ensuring they are in the correct group for their ability. Children start by learning the inital sounds, move on to blending to read simple words and progress onto reading books. We also build in comprehension questions to develop childrens knowledge of what they are reading. We model fluent and expressive reading, correct letter formation and blending, in each session.

When children have finished the Read Write Inc programme they move onto colour banded books made up from a variety of different reading schemes.
