PSHE

Intent:

At Queen Mary Avenue Infant & Nursery School it is our intent to provide children with a high quality, engaging, personal, social, health and economic curriculum that meets the needs of all pupils. With a strong emphasis on collaborative learning, children will learn how to keep themselves healthy and safe through the exploration and discussion of real-life scenarios. Within lessons children will develop their emotional literacy and build resilience equipping them with the skills to overcome challenges and develop positive relationships with themselves and others. Through the teaching of mindfulness, children are encouraged to become reflective learners, able to talk about and assess their own learning within relationships and health education.

Implementation:

We will achieve this by:

Promoting social and emotional well-being through the use of a trauma-informed approach, community time, circle time, collaborative learning, golden rules and natural consequences.

Engaging children at the start of each lesson with a game, song or real-life hook such as an object/photograph.

Encouraging children to work collaboratively through role-play, discussion and games, to develop their understanding of how to keep healthy and safe.

Practising mindfulness during “calm me” time to improve concentration prior to the teaching element of the lesson.

Using specific relationships and health education vocabulary during each lesson.

Encouraging children to reflect on their learning and progress after each lesson by completing a self-assessment activity in their learning journal.

Children being active learners within lessons resulting in high levels of participation.

Impact:

Through quality first teaching and active learning activities, children will acquire the knowledge, vocabulary, and tools specific to relationships and health education. They will be able to apply their learning in the real-world in order to problem-solve and have a good understanding of how to keep themselves happy, healthy and safe.
