English and Maths are taught daily in mixed ability classes following the guidelines from The National Curriculum 2014. Children are set for Letters and Sounds based on the phonics phase they are accessing.

In the afternoons topic is taught with a strong focus on applying Literacy skills. Topic covers science, art and design, computing, design and technology, geography, history, music, PSHCE and PE (physical education).  The books chosen for English lessons are linked to the topics. We teach RE (religious education) following the Local Authority Scheme.

Children also receive two sessions of P.E per week. Handwriting is taught four times weekly in Key Stage One. All children receive Guided Reading sessions as well as shared reading and individual reading. Children are encouraged to practise the reading skills they have learnt through reading regularly at home (at least 3 times a week). Children in Key Stage 1 also receive weekly spellings to practise at home.

Queen Mary Avenue Infant School works closely with a number of external agencies to further enhance our children’s learning through visits and school based workshops. Through our involvement with the School Sports Partnership, our children access a range of sporting events e.g. multi-skills festivals, gymnastics competitions. More recently, children across school have had opportunities to participate in musical events such the 'The Big Sing'. St. John's Ambulance, our local PCSO and the Road Safety Team are examples of external partners who have supported in school to enhance topics.
