Intent:

At Queen Mary Avenue Infant and Nursery School, it is our intent to provide a high quality, engaging Geography curriculum to develop the children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and provide them with the skills to investigate it further. Children will investigate and compare a range of places, both in Britain and abroad, to help to develop their understanding of natural and human geography. Our curriculum aims for children to develop a deeper understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. We seek to deliver a curriculum that is progressive in terms of geographical knowledge and skills and that will develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas. We also aim to develop the children’s confidence to apply their geographical skills and communicate their understanding to a range of audiences. We aim for our Geography curriculum to inspire the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments that we hope will remain with them throughout their lives.

 

Implementation:

Geography is taught through topic lessons linked to cornerstones and stand alone, skills based lessons.

Children will have a broad and balanced curriculum, learning about the world through investigating and comparing significant places, events and people.

Children will work collaboratively with their peers to develop their geographical knowledge through group discussion, and opportunities to investigate and compare places in Britain and abroad and reason about their findings.

Planning exciting and engaging real life experiences to provide children with opportunities to investigate their local environment so they can develop a sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our area unique.

Use of high quality resources and engaging texts to inspire learners and support the development of geographical knowledge and skills.

Carefully planned, engaging lessons that are progressive through the year groups will allow children to think critically, develop reasoning skills, investigate and discuss their findings.

 

Impact:

Our Geography curriculum is planned to achieve progression through the year groups. Children will develop their geographical knowledge and skills through high quality lessons, and the use of modelling and scaffolding to support this development. Children will build on their understanding of different areas of the natural world as well as human environments that are both local and global. They will be able to use geographical vocabulary to compare places and reason about their findings.

The impact will be measured by learning walks, scrap book and topic book monitoring, and planning scrutiny. It will also be seen through pupil discussions and through a showcase of work at the end of each half term (Express Afternoon) where children can demonstrate the impact of their learning.
