Intent:

At Queen Mary Avenue Infant & Nursery School it is our intent to provide children with a high-quality, challenging History curriculum that ignites children’s curiosity about history and the past and provides them with the skills to become historians. The exciting collaborative learning journey will allow for all children to work together to become confident in specific historical skills, developing their understanding and knowledge of people, events and context from a range of historical periods and significant events. We aim to ensure that historical concepts, knowledge and skills are progressive through the school and we hope to develop a love and fascination of history within the children that will remain with them throughout their lives.

We will achieve this by:

Inspiring and engaging children in history through a broad and balanced curriculum, that allows children to learn about significant people and events from a range of periods and places.

Children working collaboratively with their peers to develop and improve their historical skills as a result of group discussions, opportunities to compare and contrast events, periods or people and opportunities to reason about what they have learned.

Promoting the use of historical language and technical vocabulary to talk about their learning.  

Providing exciting real life experiences through carefully planned lessons in KS1 and purposeful play with a mixture of adult-led and child-initiated activities in EYFS.

Providing carefully planned lessons that enable children to develop their historical skills through a range of opportunities that will allow them to ask pertinent questions, analyse evidence, think critically, appreciate different perspectives and develop informed judgements. The use of scaffolding and the modelling of historical skills are used throughout the school to support and further learning in all history units.

High quality resources and texts are carefully planned and developed that enable the children to develop their historical understanding and skills throughout their learning.

 

Impact:

Through quality first teaching linked to real life contexts, children will develop the skills they need to apply their knowledge to their everyday lives and to achieve age related expectations in history. They will have a clear understanding of different historical concepts and facts (substantive knowledge), which they can then use to reason about significant events, people and periods (disciplinary knowledge).
