Intent

 

Here at Queen Mary Avenue children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, appraising and composing music. The curriculum intent is to provide opportunities for creativity within music, exploration of culture and heritage and to build on music skills through progression within the year groups. It provides opportunities for children to explore, compose perform and share their learning through music lessons within cornerstones topics, as discrete lessons and during half termly showcases. Children are exposed to the correct musical vocabulary and encouraged to use this within their lessons. Our pupils are inspired, engaged and challenged which in turn develops their confidence, self-belief and a love of learning.

Implementation:

The music curriculum ensures children sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. Music is taught by a specialist teacher in KS1 as well as part of our topic lessons. Music learning is practised and applied in our as weekly singing assemblies and various performances delivered by the local community. In Y2 all children learn to play the ukulele as part of their weekly music lessons to ensure cultural capital.

Children at Queen Mary are provided with many opportunities to perform and share their learning within music lessons, through singing festivals in KS1 and mini big sing workshops in the EYFS. Annually children perform in a number of concerts including nativities, carol concerts, Harvest festivals, Easter shows and the Y2 leaver’s concert. All of these opportunities develop children’s self-belief, confidence and love for music.

In the EYFS, music is an integral part of children’s learning journey. Children learn a wide range of songs and rhymes and develop skills for performing together. Singing and music making opportunities are used frequently and can be found within the continuous provision to embed learning, develop musical awareness and to demonstrate how music can be used to express feelings. 

The children will be provided with opportunities to develop their composing, performing, appraising and evaluating skills, using a variety of musical instruments and varied music genres.

Within music lessons children will be given opportunities to explore and compose using body percussion and a variety of instruments promoting creativity.

 

Impact:

The children at Queen Mary will become confident and creative learners within music.

Children are able to enjoy music in as many ways as they choose – either as listener, composer or performer. Music will also develop an understanding of culture and history, both in relation to children individually, as well as ethnicities from across the world. They can sing and feel a pulse.

Each year the subject leader will monitor the impact through whole school scrutiny. The subject leader will also review class scrap books which will provide evidence of music lessons and access recordings of the children developing skills within music lessons. The music lead will lead singing assemblies, attend performances and observe lessons throughout the school year. Feedback will be given to staff and actions will be added to an annual action plan.
