Science

Intent

At Queen Mary Infants and Nursery school our science curriculum intends to provide all children with high quality lessons and engaging real life experiences that develop and challenge children’s understanding of the world around them. We aim to provide an enriching science curriculum that; allows our pupils to work collaboratively, be creative and is memorable to embed scientific content, processes, theory and relationships. We intend to introduce new vocabulary and deepen children’s understanding of the language associated with science. We aim to develop children’s ability to observe, investigate and question scientific processes and build on their substantive knowledge through enquiry based learning and well planned topic lessons focussing on key science concepts. We develop children’s resilience and understanding through participating in enquiry based science activities involving problem solving, planning and evaluating.

Implementation

We will achieve this by;

Providing substantive and enquiry based learning opportunities in science that are inspiring and engaging throughout our foundation subject curriculum.

Giving children real life experiences within science and developing the essential skills needed to be active learners.

Promoting and developing the use of scientific language to talk about their learning.

Building on prior knowledge and developing investigative skills.

Children working collaboratively with their peers to develop and improve their skills.

Using high quality concrete resources that support and engage learning.

Strictly monitoring the high quality teaching and coverage of science within school and providing relevant CPD and mentoring to all staff where necessary.

Critically evaluating our science curriculum and ensuring it is kept updated, relevant and progress is visible throughout school.

Impact

The children at Queen Mary Avenue Infants and Nursery will develop a secure understanding of the relevant scientific knowledge at their age related expectations and develop the necessary skills to question, measure and evaluate scientific processes. Children will be able to use the correct vocabulary confidently to describe their scientific learning and will be ready and prepared to move on to the next step in their academic learning.
